About BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a value derived from a person's weight and height. It provides a simple numeric measure of a person's thickness or thinness, allowing health professionals to discuss weight problems more objectively with their patients.
BMI Formula
The mathematical formula to calculate BMI is:
BMI = weight(kg) / height²(m)
BMI Categories
| BMI Range | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 16.0 | Severe Thinness |
| 16.0 - 16.9 | Moderate Thinness |
| 17.0 - 18.4 | Mild Thinness |
| 18.5 - 24.9 | Normal |
| 25.0 - 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 - 34.9 | Obese Class I |
| 35.0 - 39.9 | Obese Class II |

BMI has limitations as it doesn't account for factors like muscle mass, bone density, and overall body composition. Athletes may have a high BMI due to increased muscle mass rather than body fat.
